Wishing Stars

A while ago I tried to order a book about wishing star folding which unfortunately
wasn’t available. Therefore I searched the web for a good folding instruction page.
I found some which at first glance seemed to be really good but turned out being
useless. By coincidence I found a good instruction a couple of days ago and I
finally managed to fold my first wishing star! I just have to fold the remaining 99
until I can make my wish which is much better then 1000 paper cranes! I don’t
actually believe in it but the folding will be fun.

Ohio State U merchandise

I was downtown looking for a new sweater. In one of the shops they sold besides normal t-shirts also t-shirts from Ohio State U designed by mexx. Why would I by a t-shirt from Ohio State U in Germany?

The abbreviation of abbreviation

Looking Up stupid little things I actually know. Like today the abbreviation of abbreviation. I just wanted to make sure that it is like I thought it would be. The funny thing was the note about the abbreviation of abbreviation: abbreviation [abbr.: abbr.] itself. Can you see my point here?

I've been censored

Today I noticed, that a good friend of mine deleted one of my comments I made in her blog. I have no clue why. It wasn’t something bad. I wasn’t teasing her either. It was just a note about spending money for a fancy dress and some concerns about luggage limitations on airplanes. I can’t see any reason why someone would delete this comment. Is there an unwritten comment codex for blogs?

My new office

I’ve got my own name plate on my first office door, after several people criticizing, that my name isn't J.S.! Looks great! I also got my own mailbox not a shared one for grad students, no my very own! I have a nice office on the 8th floor with a great view. It just needs some pictures on the wall, but that shouldn’t be a problem ;-)

Time

How can we have a minute? To have something implies that you are in possession of it. How can you be in possession of something immaterial like time?

Unicum Wundertüte

I got an „Unicum Wundertüte“ with more or less useful things. First they gave me the one for boys. I asked them if I could switch it. They reacted very grumpy! “We just hand them out and don’t have the time to pay attention if they are for boy or girls”. Very nice, thanks a lot!
  1. “UniQueen” a really great journal for female university students. With fashion tips, a “what-type-are-you-test” and great articles.
  2. An instant latte macchiato. I already tried a different kind, which was not as good as the yummy cappuccino I always drink.
  3. A fragrance sample, which smells actually pretty good.
  4. Some weird herb mix for vegetable gratin.
  5. Really useless paper for self-made cigarettes.
  6. A pink puma sticker. Really cool and girly!
  7. A travel deodorant for girls. Which I am not going to use because it is one of those, which makes these ugly stains in your t-shirts.
  8. Some more or less useful coupons for all different kind of things.
  9. A couple of very ugly postcards form the tourist information of Berlin.
  10. A bottle of cola and beer. That’s something a student definitely needs.

The freaky woman

I was standing in the tram on my way to work, thinking about how stupid this one advertisement was and why they placed it on the window instead of the usual advertising space as suddenly a woman jumped up from her seat next to me turning to me and started to yell that I should stop doing it. A little bit bemused I told her that I had no clue what “it” was. Somehow she blamed me to ruin her hairdo, which in my point of view was no hairdo at all; besides, I was just standing there doing nothing. I told her to change either her seat or hairstyle. I think she was pretty upset about my answer. Off cause there was no way she could change to a different seat because it was morning rush hour and the tram was really crowded, but lucky for her the man who sat vis-à-vis to her was leaving the tram. So, she actually switched to his seat. I saw no reason why I shouldn't sit down on her seat. She angrily starred at me the whole time. I thought about that this would be a great story for my blog and started to smile. I think by this time she really hated me and she hated me even more because she seemed to know that I didn't care at all. Maybe she just needs one of these white jackets with these really long sleeves.

The drunken PC

Today my PC turned itself upside down. I must have hit some weird key. Of course I couldn’t remember which one it was. Everything was upside down, even the courser. When I moved the mouse to the left side it went to the right. Great! I didn’t know what to do so I asked a workmate for help. He hasn’t seen something like this before either, but he could fix it in no time.

The pumpkin and the orange bucket

I had to say goodbye to my pumpkin. :-( Now, he’s in the front yard in that orange bucket for the vegetable and fruit garbage and I have to wait for one year to carve a new one.

No cookie-monster-gloves

Last week it was so warm that you had to wear a t-shirt. Now, one week later it is so cold that there is no way to leave the house without a winter jacket. This morning the streets were frozen. I even hadn’t had time to wash my cookie-monster-gloves.

The long night of books

My bookstore invited me to a special event with readings and cocktails. An English language center read from Jane Austen’s “sense and sensibility” but since they didn’t use any microphone and the reader itself hasn’t had a loud voice it was a little bit hard to hear something. I went to the reading of a young hannoveranian author who presented her new novel. There were many readings within the whole bookstore. It was the first time that I got invited to the long night of books.

Jack-O-Lantern & Pumpkin Pie

I made pumpkin pie from the pulp I got from the pumpkin I carved yesterday. I mixed the eggs too much; they were suddenly so fluffy that the mixing bowl became too small. I had to fill half of it into another bowl and still had to be very carefully while stirring the rest ingredients in. The pie was sooo yummy but may be a little bit too sweet. Next time I will use less sugar. Did you know that the word pumpkin is derived from the French word pompon?

Strawberries in October

It’s autumn here too but we still got strawberries in our garden. Not as sweet as usual but really yummy ones.

In September I told some of my friend about strawberries I painted. Now I took a picture of the painting to show it to you.

As you may have already noticed I really like strawberries a lot and the con of winter is that there aren't any strawberries. Nobody wants the tasteless strawberries, which traveled half around the world just to make them in winter available for us. They are way too expensive too.

First I thought about a different title for this blog something like "Strawberries, Dragonflies and Sunflowers" but I liked Polarbear-O-Rama more.

Infa

Today I visited the infa. It’s a fair for nearly everything. Every year they have a special theme this year theme was cooking. As I lifted the lit of a really tiny pot from “Le Creuset”, asking myself if someone would actually use it, I found a bunch of gummy bears hidden inside. I love gummy bears! So every time I passed that pot I lifted the lit and grabbed a couple of red bears! Yummy!

exmatriculated

This morning I got an email to inform me that my diploma is ready to be picked up. So I left my office and went to the university. First they postponed our graduation ceremony from mid September to mid November and now they cancelled it completely. I am so disappointed! How can they cancel a graduation ceremony? Anyway I went to the faculty office where I got my diploma. It was not like I expected it to be. There was nothing special, not a single glimpse of solemnness! It was more like buying a stamp.

E-Addys

Why do some people change their email address all the time? I write an email and wonder why nobody is answering me. Weeks later I go through old emails and find out that they changed their email address month ago. Am I supposed to check if the email address has changed each time I get an email? Why do they change it at all? It’s not like when you move your address change. I am still using my first email address from 1999! Well sometimes it might be necessary to get a new one for some reason. So can’t they just tell everyone? I don’t blame someone for changing the email address but for not telling me and expecting me to notice by myself.

My dictionary

I have this really big dictionary. “America’s best-selling” it says on its cover. But its index is kind of stupid. For example you open it at “L-M” you will find the page with “mask” – “mast”. I expected the beginning of “L” which is 68 pages ahead. Would it be a proper index and I would be looking for “M” I would open it somewhere between “L-M” and “N-O”. Now I newer know where to open and I have to go through more pages. I wrote the publishing company and asked if I just don’t get the big clue. They just said something about a big new innovation. They were really proud of this bullshit. How about we invent a completely new alphabet! Next time I buy the British dictionary, they may drive on the wrong side but they know how to index dictionaries.

New blog - old blog

I decided to start a new blog. I will write in English since most of my friends don't speak any German, even if it won't be perfect though.

Enjoy!
